Communications Officer

In November 2025 the Provincial Grand Master announced the introduction of a Lodge and Chapter Communications Officers. As far as we are aware, we are the first Province to introduce such an initiative.

Communications Officers are responsible for maintaining the unit’s public relations, website and social media presence. For example, they may post Lodge or Chapter activities on the Provincial Facebook Group. This is an early-stage initiative, and we are working on the next stages.

The Communications Officer is not a collared office, but an Additional Appointment made at the discretion of the Lodge or Chapter. Some Lodges have already appointed a Communications Officer, and this is regarded as good practice rather than a requirement. The role may also be shared among a small team to help distribute the workload.

It is hoped that this initiative will support our Community Engagement. For example, when a local organisation receives a grant from the West Riding Community Fund of WRMCL, promotion is most effective when led by the unit embedded in that community. Working at both Lodge (local) and Provincial (regional) levels will allow us to amplify these messages more effectively.

Posting from your Lodge Facebook Page

Communications Officers are strongly encouraged to post all Lodge events such as an Initiation, Passing, Raising and Installations to their Facebook page to show how active Freemasonry is in their locality. Please note, photographs can only be taken after the ceremony. Also, socials such as Ladies Nights, Clay Pigeon Shooting, Golf competitions or Lodge Weekends all show the social side and diversity of Freemasonry. 

Please remember to use the hashtags to help your post get noticed, for example #Harrogate #Freemasonry #Freemasons. If you mention @Yorkshire West Riding Freemasons at the bottom of the post, Provincial Communications will pick it up and we will share your post, thus amplifying your content. However, this will depend on the quality of the post, and we will not share a post of a 'grip and grin' photograph.
